Shift Happens
The video shift happens really makes the viewer think about what they are watching. In a way it is kind of disturbing to think that most of the web sites that are most frequented today are websites that did not even exist 6 years ago. Another thing that i learned from the video that disturbed me was how much emphasis is put on technology. Do i believe that this is a good thing? yes it is a good thing but only up to a certain point. Technology is great to have but i also believe that it is important for people to know how to do things without technology. For example, i had to teach one of my younger family members how to find subjects out of an encyclopedia the other day because they had become so dependent on the internet to do their research. Therefore i believe that although technology is something that can and has helped people all over the world, there have to be steps taken to teach people how to do things the "old fashion" way. I think its amazing that i have the ability to web surf, but one of the only reasons i feel so strongly about this is because i remember when i had to deal with dial up internet. I feel like knowing the past helps me enjoy the present.

I definitely agree with you, Gabe. It is appalling how dependent students are now a days on the internet. Often times, I find myself wishing that there are limitations imposed on students but there is nothing that we can do about this.
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean, there are a lot of disadvantages, but I do feel that eventually everyone should be able to benefit from this technological shift.
There are certainly disadvantages to technology being omnipresent in our lives, but do the advantages outweigh any of the negatives? I would argue they do. With anything, there is a balance that needs to be struck. The challenge is this balance needs to start at home as we can only do so much as educators.
